John Donne (1572-1631)

John Donne 可算是玄想詩人（Metaphysical poets）中最最知名的一位，尤其是他鼎鼎有名的那句話："No man is an island" (Meditation XVII)。 之所以稱其為玄想詩人，其實是因為早年中譯的措辭沿用，而與玄想冥思無關。

中文譯名的"玄想"來自metaphysical一詞，然而此處的metaphysical又與哲學中的metaphysics，也就是形而上學有所不同。此字在詩派中的意涵誠如構詞所示：meta意指beyond（超越），而physic意指object（物體）。換言之，詩的命題與意象的選用，往往著眼於弦外之音，言外之意，明詠一物，實則意在物外，暗指他方。

以John Donne之作為例，則（細節與邏輯在此略過）圓規詠夫婦恩愛，鬼魅訴情變之怨，鑄幣喻離別之淚，跳蚤邀床笫之歡（天哪！我好適合參加八股科舉哦！）。我們所選定的John Donne精讀作品，便是跳蚤一詩（"The Flea"）。

另外，值得注意的是，玄想詩一般而言，會有些共同的特徵，此處略舉一二（這是從我的老師那裡流傳下來的筆記唷！）：
